Registered Apprenticeship Program for Technicians Panel
In this panel, representatives from ASE and the American Trucking Associations' Technology & Maintenance Council will present information on efforts to establish a registered apprenticeship program for medium/heavy duty truck technicians based on the successful launch last year of a similar program for automotive technicians.

Robert M. Braswell is the executive director for American Trucking Associations’ Technology & Maintenance Council. Braswell is responsible for ensuring the effectiveness of all TMC programs, products, meetings and services covering all aspects of light-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicle engineering, maintenance and maintenance management.
Since 2005, he has served as co-host and content producer of the weekly coast-to-coast satellite radio segment, “Tech Talk with TMC” on “The Dave Nemo Show,” produced in partnership with Dave Nemo Entertainment and heard on SiriusXM Channel 146 every Tuesday at 10 am eastern. The show provides technical information and exchange on a wide range of technical issues to audience of U.S. and Canadian listeners.
Braswell joined TMC in 1992 as Information Manager. He was named TMC assistant technical director in 1994, and promoted to technical director in 1995. He was awarded the Council’s highest honor in 2004 — The Silver Spark Plug. He was named executive director in 2017. He received in 2021 the CCJ Career Leadership Award from Commercial Carrier Journal.
He has been a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) since 1992; has served as a member of SAE’s Truck & Bus Council and has chaired SAE’s Commercial Vehicle Maintenance Committee.
George Arrants

ASE Education Foundation
George Arrants is working with the ASE Education Foundation to develop and implement an initiative for the automotive, medium/heavy truck and collison industry to partner industry and education and open opportunities for student work-based learning and apprenticeships across the country.
Since 2018, he has authored 5 articles annually for Fleet Maintenance Magazine.
Previously an automotive education consultant specializing in ASE accreditation, he worked with instructors and administrators to develop partnerships with local business and industry through the programs advisory committees and guides them through the ASE program accreditation. Arrants also chaired the Technology and Maintenance Council SuperTech competition for 14 years from the beginning in 2005 and the Future Technicians Skills Competition. In 2015, he was awarded the council’s highest honor — The Silver Spark Plug.
He holds 3 US Patents and multiple international patents with Base Air Management out of Australia.
Arrants is also a former high school and community college automotive technology instructor. While working for a tool manufacturer, he co-authored an instruction manual for schools that simplified the industry accreditation process to assist programs in achieving National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF). He was selected to serve on NATEF’s board of trustees and was his company’s liaison to Automotive Youth Educational Systems.
He has been a guest of the government of Oman where he evaluated the countries automotive programs and made recommendations to the country's senior officials including the Minister of Manpower. He also worked closely with U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration where he led the automotive strategic development team that advised the agency’s “High Growth Job Training Initiative”.
Kenneth Calhoun

Kenneth Calhoun is a veteran of our industry working in numerous roles in fleet, distributor and dealer organizations. Calhoun has been immersed in remote diagnostics since 2015 establishing his own company which he sold to his current employer Altec where he serves as part of the chassis engineering team. During his tenure in the industry, he has served as chairman of the Arkansas Trucking Association’s Maintenance and Technology Council, general chairman and treasurer of the Technology and Maintenance Council (TMC) of the American Trucking Associations and has served on the Legislative Task Force on Workforce Education Excellence here in Arkansas. He is a past member of the Research Advisory Committee of the American Transportation Research Institute, he chairs the Program Advisory Committee for the diesel technology program for ASU Beebe/Searcy campus and established the Apprenticeship Standards Committee within TMC. He is a member of the board of directors for the Be Pro Be Proud Foundation. In June 2020, Calhoun was appointed by Gov. Asa Hutchinson to serve on the Career Education and Workforce Development Board which he now chairs.
Mike Coley

ASE Education Foundation
Mike Coley has been with ASE for more than 25 years, serving as president of the ASE Education Foundation since 2019. Prior to that, he served as senior vice president for ASE, directing operations, test development, customer service, and MIS workgroups, along with coordination with ASE’s testing contractor, Prometric. In that role, he led the conversion of ASE tests from paper-pencil to computer, the construction of ASE’s first CRM system, and the development of the ASE Renewal App.
Prior to joining the ASE staff, Coley managed his family’s automotive repair business in San Antonio, Texas, and served on the ASE Board of Directors, including a term as chairman in 1991. Coley has a B.S. in electrical engineering from SMU in Dallas, Texas, an MBA from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., and previously taught automotive emissions classes at Northern Virginia Community College.
